Other Acne Treatments Available
Laser and light therapy are skin deep treatments.
This means that the surface skin is not affected by the laser and light acne therapy therefore reducing the appearance of scars. Some Laser and light therapies cause oil gland damage, resulting in low oil production for the skin. There are three particular Laser and light therapies that have commonly applied in acne treatment, these are:
- Blue light therapy.
The skin is exposed severally to low-intensity blue light that destroys the acne causing bacteria P. acnes. The blue light acne therapy may cause a little redness and drying of the treated areas, but this clears with time. A red light has been added on to this acne therapy, this combination is more effective.
- Pulsed light and heat energy therapy.
This combination of pulsed light and heat energy in treating acne destroys P. acnes and reduces the size of the sebaceous glands consequently decreasing the oil production. This acne treatment is normally used for mild to moderate acne and inflammatory acne
- Diode laser treatment.
This acne treatment targets the sebaceous glands in the dermis and does no in any way affect the outer skin. To reduce pain during this acne treatment procedure an analgesics is applies on to the skin prior to commencement of the Diode laser treatment. One may experience swelling and redness on treated areas after treatment.
Cosmetic procedures for the treatment of acne are applied directly on to the skin and can be very effective if combined with other treatments. P acnes has a tendency of eventually being resistant to certain types of antibiotics so combination acne therapies that employs the use of benzoyl peroxide are best for resistant strains. They are
Chemical peels.
Applied to the skin glycolic acid or salicylic acid, remove dead skin cells, unblock pores and clear whiteheads and blackheads. New skin growth is also triggered. They are combined with acne gels or acne creams, so that the chemical peels can penetrate the skin properly. Caution has to be taken in application of this acne treatment, because the strength of the chemical will determine how much redness and scarring will occur. Other side effects include
Microdermabrasion.
Crystals that polish the skin are applied onto the skin surface then vacuumed off. This vacuuming removes both the crystals and skin cells. This acne treatment unblocks the skin and exfoliates it. It is also most effective when combined with other treatments.
Combination acne therapies involves the use of prescribed creams and taking antibiotics.
The combinations may be as follows:
Vitamin A derived prescription products and oral antibiotics. These two work at increasing cell growth and killing P. acnes bacteria and reducing inflammation respectively.
Benzoyl peroxide and topical antibiotics. These two acne treatments work in the following way, the Benzoyl peroxide is and antibiotic and also dries up the oil in the skin as the topical antibiotics also kills skin surface bacteria and eradicates inflammation.
